NIGHTHAWK

Hopper completed 'Nighthawks' in 1942 and this painting remains one of the most recognisable and relatable paintings in 20th century American art.
The diner in Hopper’s painting might be based on a real establishment in Greenwich Village. Glaring lights disperse onto the darkened street while we become silent voyeurs, watching Hopper’s unreachable subjects through the window and we have no door to enter.
“Unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city.”
