Automat is a 1927 painting by the American realist painter Edward Hopper first displayed on Valentine's Day 1927. It portrays a lone woman staring into a cup of coffee in an automat at night. The reflection of identical rows of light fixtures stretches out through the night-blackened window.
Edward Hoppers work appears sad but does not make us sad, a painterly counterpart to the music of Leonard Cohen. His dominant theme in his art is loneliness. It is often night, and through the window intrudes darkness and threat. He didn't know anything about Corona...
